The Name The term Cartesian refers to René
Descartes, the French mathematician and
philosopher who, in 1637, introduced the idea of
specifying the location of a point on a surface by
using two intersecting lines, the x and y axes, as
measuring guides.
The Designer Cartesian Graphics was started in 2003
by Julia Roshkow, a former physician and flower girl dress designer
(yes, really) with a serious fabric addiction. Originally begun as
a home business, Cartesian Graphics is now based in a loft in Long
Island City, Queens, a somewhat industrial area of New York City
with excellent subway access and superb brick oven pizza.
