Every Cartesian Graphics crystal collage is individually handmade by Julia, and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity. All materials are archival.
Using an advanced mathematical technique (known in academic circles as arithmetic), Julia first transforms the pattern she’s chosen into a precisely sized grid. We realize that we risk repeating ourselves here, but Julia is nothing if not precise.
Once the grid is designed, it is giclee printed on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag, a 100% cotton fine art paper. The printed grid is then mounted to support the weight of the crystals and to prepare the piece for display. For mounting we use two layers of Rising Museum Board, also 100% cotton, laminated together for added strength and stability.
The crystals are then applied using a water based solvent free glue created specifically for permanently attaching crystals to various substrates. We use only Swarovski™ crystals, unquestionably the finest crystals available. The brilliance of Swarovski™ crystals is unmatched, and they are completely lead-free.
The Cartesian Graphics color palette consists of 48 crystal colors (see our Color Card). Each crystal is placed on a printed square that has been meticulously color corrected to emphasize and enhance the color of the crystal.
Compared to our state-of-the-art printing and mounting techniques, applying the crystals to the printed grid is extremely low tech, requiring just a tweezer, a small piece of aluminum foil, the always classic wooden toothpick, and, predictably, lots of time.
